Brilliantly paced. The love story is woven well into the suspense. Past a certain point, the thrill prevails and you can’t put this down. Realistic characters and dialogue make this a pleasure to read.

This was an entertaining, fast-paced book, but parts of it made me very uncomfortable. The romance was weird between Julie and her dead husband’s best friend (gag). I found the thriller aspects engaging and interesting, but I didn’t care as much as I would have liked to. It was a fun read and a good book to pull you out of a slump, but nothing to write home about.

I took notes while I read:
Well, in the beginning when it’s said that Julie’s coworker Andrea’s appearance “attracted a certain type of man” I was fuming. Really? Slut shaming? Appearance shaming? And then she’s sitting there hating on Julie. Yes Nicholas Sparks, this is what all women think. We all hate on other women.
Andrea implying that Julie is selfish for not wearing the locket Richard had got her. Bro, he got it after the third date, like calm down. And he engraved it with her initials??? He’s a serial killer or something.
Mike’s brother is a dick and not funny.
Mike fed Singer chocolate chip cookies— asshole.
Singer just fetching the phone and all that without training- unrealistic (and that’s coming from a dog person)
Mike is a little piss baby after he finds out Richard spent the night when he and Julie weren’t even really dating yet and has the audacity to be upset.

What I DID like:
Singer’s name is unique and I like the story behind it
Mike going on his first date with Julie and being nervous was cute and made me laugh
It was suspenseful enough to keep me reading

Julie Barenson's young husband left her two unexpected gifts before he died: a great dane puppy named singer and a promise that he will always be watching over her. Four years have passed Julie is still living in the small town of Swansboro, California. Julie is emotionally ready to make a commitment to someone again. Should it be Richard Franklin the handsome, sophisticated engineer, who treats her like a queen? or Mike Harris, the down to earth nice guy who was her husband's best friend? Choosing one should bring her more happiness than she has in years. Julie however is fighting for her life.

This is the 10th novel that I have read by Nicholas Sparks. I loved the love story in this book, it was so sweet and cute. This is the most protective dog I have ever read about. I have been loving Nicholas Sparks books recently they are some of my favourite to read. I have always loved that Nicholas Sparks books have a little romance and some mystery. The thing I love about his book is how they also have audiobooks, in my opinion audiobooks and physical are the best to read together. The one thing I dislike about his books, is how someone always dies near the end of the book. I have a lot more books to read on my bookshelf by him and hopefully I can read them soon. I can't wait to read more Nicholas Sparks books, this author is probably one of my comfort authors.
