This was an interesting twist on an old mystery: the murder of the Romanov family in 1918. I have to admit that, though I thought I had it all figured out, the author's final twist surprised me, which is always nice. This short novel could serve as a great introduction to a more serious study of Tsar Nicholas II and his intriguing young family.

Amazing story that really pulled me in right from the beginning. Thrilling ride, super quick read. Love this auhtor.

Nikolai, Aleksandra, and their five children were the ultimate symbols, both good and bad, of all that was Russia...
3.5 stars. If like me, you know very little about the Romanov's, this is an excellent introduction. The author explains, while blending it in as part of the story, the politics and history. He also shows that bad rulers, can still be good people. And to top it off he manages to still add a lot of suspense to a story where everyone knows the ending.

Warning: if you read this book, do not try to speed-read the last few pages! Read every word.

This book left me very conflicted. On one hand, it's a historical retelling of the lives and ending of the royal Romanov family. On the other, it's more of a historical "re-imagining" than a retelling. The narrator takes a lot of liberties especially when conjecture is involved. Opinion = bias!
