The Second Home was one of the books high up on my anticipated summer reading list and while it didn’t quite live up to my hopes, I really enjoyed it!
The story follows the three Gordon children, Ann, Poppy, and Michael (an adopted brother), over the course of one summer on Cape Cod. The decisions and events that occur over that one summer have a rippling effect on the next 16 years of their lives.
I was unsure about the book and the direction it was going in for the first third of this book but it takes a turn after that and I really enjoyed the pace of the story and the gentle pull of suspense (I use that word loosely). I will say, the writing felt a little cheesy at points but overall it was pretty easy to get lost in this story and the dynamics between the characters. I liked how Clancy shifted perspectives each chapter so you could see situations from multiple view points.
I recommend this one if you love family dramas, enjoy New England settings, or are looking for a classic summer beach read!

I'm a sucker for stories where families have a summer home out East. Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, or Maine all make me wish for a house on the beach to spend the summers. The Gordon family hails from Milwaukee, but treks to Cape Cod each summer to live their best lives. The story is told between the past and the present from the POV of Ann, Poppy, and Michael. I had some issues with elements of the plot, but I don't want to give away the story. I enjoyed the writing and most of the characters enough to give it four stars. Though it was set in the late nineties/early 2000s then present day, it felt as though it could have been in the 50s or 60s. I think some of my issues with elements of the story would be moot if that were the case. This was definitely worth reading. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

O primeiro capítulo já me deixou de coração apertado. Ann, adulta, está revisitando a antiga casa onde passava os verões com sua família antigamente. Ela e sua irmã Poppy estão se desfazendo das propriedades agora que seus pais faleceram. Ela conversa com a corretora a respeito de valores e de possibilidades para a propriedade, e sente-se muito mal vendo que um lugar tão especial não tinha muito valor no mercado. Esse sentimento de despedida, de pensar que nunca mais voltará num determinado lugar onde foi muito feliz, é algo que mexe muito comigo. Logo ali, percebi que esse livro ia ser difícil pra mim.
Depois desse papo com a corretora, temos capítulos intercalados do ponto de vista dos três irmãos (Ann, Poppy e Michael) quando eram adolescentes.
O Michael era o melhor amigo de Ann, mas não teve uma infância fácil. Por gostar tanto dele e saber que enfrentava dificuldades, ela pediu que sua família o adotasse. Os pais toparam a ideia e o acolheram, realmente o tratando como um deles. Não queriam de forma alguma fazer diferença entre ele e as duas filhas biológicas.
Porém, para Michael a situação não era bem assim. Ele sempre se sentia como alguém de fora na família. Por mais que as meninas tentassem incluí-lo em tudo, ele não conseguia abrir mão do sentimento de que aquele não era seu lugar. E isso se tornava ainda pior quando pensava no que sentia por Ann, que era a pessoa mais próxima dele, por quem nutria uma paixão proibida, já que agora deveria vê-la apenas como sua irmã.
Aos 17 anos, a Ann trabalha como babá para a família dos Shaw no verão e começa a desenvolver um sentimento estranho pelo pai das crianças, o Anthony. Ela sabe que é errado, mas cria fantasias sobre eles em sua cabeça. O homem, por sua vez, não está nem um pouco preocupado com seu casamento, ou com o fato de ela ser menor de idade, e dá várias cantadas na garota. (Dá nojo ler essas partes.)
Ao mesmo tempo, ela percebe que também não vê Michael apenas como um irmão, e que de alguma forma esse sentimento é correspondido, mas não sabe como lidar com isso... Pensa que sua família jamais aceitaria algo assim.
Então, uma coisa horrível acontece, que afasta o Michael da família...
E o fechamento disso só vem à tona após muitos anos, nesse momento atual, quando as irmãs estão vendendo as propriedades da família, sem mencionarem que havia mais um herdeiro na parada, que sumiu anos atrás...
Eu amo dramas familiares, principalmente quando mostram diferentes momentos de suas vidas, amadurecendo, lidando com problemas de formas diferentes, buscando a verdade, etc. Me apaixonei pelos três irmãos e realmente consegui entender o sentimento de cada um deles. Li um pouco devagar, tiveram dias que nem consegui pegar no livro, pois tem algumas partes realmente tristes e pesadas... Mas a mensagem é linda, e me emocionei demais no final.

This was a really engrossing book... which is exactly what I needed right now. The story begins when the Gordon daughters, Ann and Poppy, are in high school. Ann's friend from school, Michael, has moved in with them because he has no other place to go. The Gordon parents are teachers, partly because they're passionate about academia and partly because they love having the summers free to visit their second home, an almost-falling-apart family traditional salt box vacation home on Cape Cod. The summer before Ann and Michael's senior year, their safe and comfortable family dynamic begins to fall apart. I enjoy how the house and the Cape Cod setting function in the plot. I believed in Ann and Michael and Poppy implicitly, and all of their journeys seemed realistic. The story is told in third person, in alternating points of view, from the three high school students. We see the three of them as teens and as adults as the story progresses. I wasn't sure, at the beginning, if I would like this or not; the people in the family are troubled in lots of troubling ways. But I really cared about what would happen to them. This would be a great book club book.
A great summer read, different than your typical beach read. I really enjoyed this book and getting to see each characters POV. This was a deeper read that I was not expecting, but I’m really glad I finally picked this one up!

I really enjoyed The Second House. Characters came alive with every chapter. I particularly liked how Christina Clancy managed to tell the story from three different perspectives and show all characters through each other eyes. This approach gave them volume and dimension. I also liked how the summer house on Cape Cod came alive as a character too. The property probably played major role in reconciliation of all the parties involved. Plot wise is was fine with major event, unforeseen circumstances and great miscommunication. The flow was smooth and build up was good too.
Overall, solid good enjoyable read with some family drama and pretty much happy ending.

The Second Home by Christina Clancy is a story about family secrets and lies. After a family tragedy, Ann returns to her family's summer home 15 years after the summer where everything changed. The story then flashes back to that summer. Told through the eyes of Ann, her younger sister Poppy, and their adopted brother, Michael the events of that summer are revisited. Each sibling has a different story to tell leading up to how this all culminates. The story then returns to the present where the siblings' relationships are different, but they are brought back together and must come to an agreement as the fate of that summer home is decided. This story is a tragic one, and it's a hard read given what happens. This is also a story that involves lies (and manipulation) that have a huge impact over all the years. This is a well-written story of family, but again be advised what goes down is heavy. Thanks to NetGalley for the early look at this June 2020 release.
Started reading because of the connection to WI. Realized there was very little of WI in this book and the story wasn’t good enough to keep me interested. Forced myself to get through it and was pleasantly surprised by the sweet ending.
