I thought this book was well written overall, but I couldn't finish it. I just didn't like any of the characters and I thought the plot was a bit all over the place. I have too many other books to read and didn't want to spend the time finishing this one.

Whew. Alright. Let me tell y’all, when I thought this was going to be a fun and lighthearted read boyyyy was I wrong! The life experiences of these characters 🤭 I just wasn’t ready, some parts were so hard to get through. The anger I felt towards a specific character… 🤬 I needed to take a few moments to remind myself this is just a book because the emotions were emotioning 😂 Oh and I could’ve definitely done without Poppy feeling annoyed about the “ethnic” foods and people in town- wth was that? 🙄 I will say, the level of emotional maturity and lack of communication was SO annoying. I also have such conflicted feelings about the end BUT I was emotionally invested in a way I didn’t expect and very much so in my feelings.

A touching and complex story about how a single decision leads to a chain of actions that tears the Gordon family apart, and how it takes the sudden and unexpected death of the Gordon parents to even try and stitch themselves back together. Christi Clancy writes the family with such perceptive care, each character real and oh-so-fallible. The drama distinctly focuses on Ann and her recently-adopted brother Michael, but every member of the family brings something important to the story--because it is a story about the family, at the end of the day. One of my favorite things about this book, too, was the incredible rendering of the settings--I've never been to Cape Cod, but I feel like I have after reading this book!

I will say that there were some times when I thought the dialogue was a little on-the-nose, but it didn't prevent the characters from feeling real for me. Also, this book is definitely marketed as more of a lighthearted beach read than it is--there is some dark stuff in here!
