I kept going between 3 and 4 stars. I liked the characters but found the Anthony/ Michael/ Ann agreement hard to believe. How did Michael and/or Ann not approach each other about the whole thing since they’d been so close? Also if they all wanted to find Michael, they could have found him. I thought the Milwaukee references were fun, but kind of name dropping and not value adding. But I did find myself rooting for the characters and it made Cape Cod very appealing
What a perfect escape read. I’ve never been to Cape Cod by I have a place I love to visit on Lake Erie. This invoked that love of place and got it fits into your history. One of my favorite moments in the book is when Poppy is driving toward the house and starts to feel as she sees signs and landmarks fly by. I know exactly how that feels. Ann, Poppy and their adopted brother Michael spent summers in the family vacation home. One summer, everything fell apart dividing the siblings and Michael disappears. After their parents death the summer house draws them back together. This is a fantastic family drama. Christina Clancy writes with such a sense of setting that I felt I was there. I highly recommend this book! Perfect for summer.
Two siblings and two educator parents in Milwaukee bring a teenage boy into their home, eventually adopting him. Ann and Poppy love Michael and are thrilled to have him be a member of their family, until one disastrous trip to the family’s second home in Cape Cod. Michael, Poppy and Ann will live the next 15 years of their lives estranged, until a family catastrophe brings them all back together in that second home.
I loved the concept of this book at first sight. What would it take for a “perfect” family to bring another child, no less a teenager, into their home? How would two teenage girls react to a new member of the family, especially a boy? How would this teenage boy assimilate and feel comfortable being a member of a firmly established group?
Christina Clancy does an amazing job of weaving these five people into one coherent family group. Even though Ann and Michael are the same age, and Poppy is younger, no one feels left out of the family unit. Ed and Connie, the parents, do everything they can to keep the family together and functioning normally. Until that summer in Cape Cod when the family splinters irreparably. Or is it? Because of Clancy’s ability to write this story in three voices, we see each sibling’s side of the story and how their lives were changed.
Honestly, this was absolutely a “can’t put it down” type of book. I wanted to find out how the pieces would or wouldn’t come back together. Excellent book.

A beautiful story about the messiness and complexity of life, and what can happen to even the most seemingly functional family when there isn't good communication among them. I enjoyed this book and all of the emotions I felt while reading it.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

Coming off a family drama that I did not appreciate at all, I can honestly say that this book is how a family drama should be written.
Terrible ordeals hidden for years, estrangement, miscommunications, and resolution is what this book is all about. Could be summed up as “Let’s see how much one jackass can screw up, for everyone.
Ann is a teenage girl who gets herself in a bad situation, while trusting an older man. Her sister Poppy is off getting high all the time, and her adoptive brother Michael, makes her feel something more than brotherly love.
Miscommunications rule everything in this story. If they would just talk to each other, years of heartache could have been avoided, but alas, that is not the case.
As a bonus there were great details around Milwaukee; love reading about a lot of the places I’ve been. Sconnie approved!

I adored the Cape Cod setting, but this one fell flat for me.
Christina Clancy hit it out of the park with her debut novel. I will definitely be watching for future releases.
This book is set in multiple locations with the main two being Wisconsin and the Outer Cape. It is told from three points of view: Ann, Poppy and Michael.
The writing of this book is rich. I wanted to hop in my car and drive to the Outer Cape to explore a place I have never been but felt like I knew from the book. The characters are relatable and well developed. I would have liked to be friends with this family by the end of the book.
This book was a great start to 2020 and will be one of my favorites of the year.
I received an ARC of this book. All thoughts & opinions are my own.

This started out great, but the plot got so overly complicated and soap opera-ish. Everyone's actions felt totally unbelievable (except Poppy.) A whole lot of events hinge on nobody questioning the guy they barely know. Everything would have gone differently if any two people had just had one conversation over like 15 years, and there's no reason to think they wouldn't. I'm actually low-key mad about it.
