Another well crafted Temperance Brennan novel. With plenty of twists and topical themes it is a good read , particularly for those who have read the preceding books.

I wrote an entire review and it didn't save so I'm mad and not rewriting it but the book was fine, I enjoyed it. It could have been clearer and more concise so that's why it gets 4 stars

I’ve watched all 12 seasons of the show Bones and was(still is) a huge fan! I’ve always wanted to read the series that the show was loosely based of off. I got an ARC version of this book a while ago and finally, got around to reading it. I was glad I did!

I obviously didn’t understand some part of the story as this is the 19th installment of the series and I missed quite a bit of background. I did enjoyed the mystery and Brennan’s personality in the book and also the author’s writing style! Now that I’ve gotten a taste of this series, I think I’m going to go back and start from book 1!

Temperance Brennan receives photographs of a corpse via text on her phone. She does not recognise the number that sent them. The corpse had been mutilated by feral hogs but the new medical examiner, Dr Heavner, someone Brennan has no respect for, does not call her in for a consult and the corpse remains unidentified. Brennan starts her own investigation but is hampered by the symptoms of her medical condition. Her investigation, with the help of Detective Siddell leads to a controversial radio host and has links with missing children cases.

Thanks to Netgalley, Simon & Schuster and Kathy Reichs for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review

This book was published this year, but the heroine at one point makes sun tea, as if it’s 1978. Later she downloads a ringtone to her phone like it’s 2010. Anachronisms aside, the story was good; it was a complicated plot that moved along well and had an unexpected ending.
I gave it three stars instead of four because of annoying writing. Every third chapter Tempe ignores the advice of her detective friend and goes off on her own to get in some sort of trouble. That trope was cliche before this book and becomes even more hackneyed here. Too many chapters ended in clickbait: “Had been scrolling a while when I spotted an image that froze my breath.”, followed by the beginning of the next chapter that diverts to something else before coming back to the shocking revelation. It’s a trite device. Lastly, every time Tempe has some insight, neurons fire, lines stretch out and concert dots, fireworks go off. It’s just too repetitive.
The worst part, though, was when she went into a suspect’s apartment and it had been cleared out and wiped down to remove all traces of the person. Tempe just decides that the person did it themselves - never considers that someone else might have.

I have not consistently followed the Temperance Brennan books, and find that some really are knocked out of the park for me, while others are enjoyable but middle of the road. This one falls into the latter category. In the afterword Kathy Reichs explains dealing with her own health issues and I'm sure that impacted this story. It was an enjoyable read, but not "wow".

I thank Netgalley and Simon and Schuster UK for gifting me this book to review. All opinions are my own.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Kathy Reichs returns with a fantastic new novel featuring her popular character forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan, who must use all her tradecraft to discover the identity of a faceless corpse, its connection to a decade-old missing child case, and why the dead man had her cell phone number.

For me this was a struggle, I couldn't get into it at all. Whether that was because of the story itself or because it's part of a series.. I think the latter. I'm one of those people who like to read a series in order so I know what is going on before but ive heard you can read the Brennan series as standalones. Unfortunately not me.

I found in places it dragged and there wasn't always enough explanation but that could be down to the fact it is part of a series and maybe the reader is meant to be clued up with the storyline already. Some parts did pick up when Tempe had to go rogue to uncover the answers as her new boss holds a grudge and is doing anything to keep her off the case.

I've watched the programme but never read the books and maybe I will add the series to my TBR but I'll definitely start at the beginning.

LOVED THIS BOOK - very appropriate for a 2020 listen and great twists and turns along the way. This is the first Temperance Brennan book I've read and I'm all in - looking forward to the other 18! I didn't feel like I needed to read the other 18 books first and have heard that you don't need to read them in order.
