God, just a perfect evocation of an attempt at understanding the tragically evil soul of a world that’s passing you by and that you no longer understand. The world wasn’t always like this, was it? Maybe it was. Maybe it’s the kids, maybe it’s the politicians, maybe it’s the gangs, maybe it’s the drugs, maybe it’s just getting old. But it’s there and it’s acting with a profound inevitability. McCarthy’s beautifully blunt prose is so perfect for this forthright swirling of events, which conclude with a matter-of-fact abruptness to be appraised by the wandering southern sheriff who sees yet another vicious crime infecting a world he’s slowly feeling a deep alienation from. I think McCarthy understands him and sympathizes with him but I don’t know that the book totally *agrees* with him. I think McCarthy understands the inevitable shift of culture and it scares him, unjustifiably or not, and he lays it bare here. Perfect ending. I can’t believe how perfect this book was for the Coens of all people to adapt

That was incredible! I was immediately sucked in from page 1 and it absolutely did not let up.
This is my third Cormac McCarthy novel, and although I liked the other two (The Road, All the Pretty Horses) quite a bit, this one is by far my favorite. The fast paced and action packed style of writing needed to tell this story feels perfect for the author's prose.
I was amazed at how much he was able to tell by writing so little. I could see the crime scenes, I could smell the gunsmoke on the air, in just a few clipped sentences. I identified with all the characters. I adored the dialogue. I could NOT put this down until it was done. Both the action in the book and the "feels" of the slower sections are incredible. I can now safely agree with the majority that Cormac McCarthy is a master of the American novel, and he accomplishes that in a style of prose that is more unique than any other work of fiction I've read.
I can't wait to read my next Cormac novel - and after how much I loved this one, you can be sure Blood Meridian will be up next!

I don't think McCarthy can do any wrong in my eyes. This was the definition of a page-turner. The narrative moved along nicely and McCarthy has a way with words that few other authors can hope to even mimic. I really enjoyed the struggle between the ideas of fate vs. free will.

It's hard for me to imagine a book can be any closer to perfect than this one
