This is what literature is all about

I watched the film and felt that it ended quite suddenly. I never thought to read the book which extends the ending but not as relevant as the audience may had wanted.

Closure.

When I started to read, I was taken by surprise of McCarthy's writing style in this book. It's very minimalist and exact in prose. The dialogue removed most of the tags of "said", "exclaimed", "whispered", etc.

I wondered if this format was designed for men who didn't like to read. I had previously read Sally Rooney's Conversations with Friends and found the styles similar.

While the story was about drug dealers and assassins, it was about the perspective of our country. There was the notion that we always think America is somehow better than it really is. As if propaganda and short memories washes out our evil bloody history.

Make America Great Again. When was America Great?

It was violent and full of inequalities. But I suppose the catch phrase should really be, Make America My "Normal".

The Culture Wars that were formed have allowed an arrogant man to take over and erode the rights of every citizen by destroying its foundations, the Constitution. People can't buy back the rights that the judicial rulings taken has from us. What he has taken is priceless beyond measure.

Seems like everyone but myself liked this book, but I cannot say i did. The characters had no depth, and I felt trapped in a revolving setting of motel to car to violent scene: repeat. The theme of free will and fate/good and evil are strong throughout the book, I see the mastery of this. The scene with Chigurh explaining how all choices lead one to their fate then flipping a coin to add some chance on fate was a great climax and provided a lot of clarity, however even with the smooth delivery of this scene, I still didn’t feel engaged or enthralled. Just another good ol boy (Bell) against real bad guy (Chigurh) and some middle ground guy (Moss) who happened to stir up drama with greed.

I appreciate the uniqueness to Mccarthy’s writing style, but it’s not my taste. It often reads like rambling and the dialogue is fast, choppy, and unnecessarily repetitious with the characters asking for clarification or often repeating themselves for dramatic effect or to get a point across.

Maybe I’m wanting different things in a book and should appreciate the themes more - wish i liked it as much as everyone else!

Very close to the movie, but the writing style is a bit unusual

Ending had little resolution but yet still felt satisfying? More to come…

4.5 Stars; and well worth the ride. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars, is because I saw the movie.

This is a well-written story. It is thrilling without all the fanfare. Simple murder, if you will. Chigurgh; one of our main characters; is probably one of the more evil characters I have read about. You read about serial killers all the time; but they are pathetic, brutal and almost cliche.' Always they have an excuse; i was beaten, my mother didn't hug me, i was bullied...blah, blah, blah. Chigurgh is just pure, cold, calculating and a killer if there ever was one. He is trully a psychopath in its' true form. His inability to feel or emote any type of feeling is scary. I don't even think he actually gets angry; more "inconvenienced" as Wells put it.

If you have not seen the movie, then you are doing yourself a disservice. If you have not seen the movie, then read the book first. Then when you see the movie, you have the thrill of seeing these characters come to life. There is no zing, pop and wow factor. This book is straightforward and tells a story. A story from Sheriff Bells' POV. He gives his humble opinion and we watch him struggle through his feelings on retiring and how much the world has changed, or has it?

You will think about the world as we know it, and wonder; has it changed? Has there always been this much evil in the world? Who will save us? Do we deserve to be saved? Deep, I know; but when you look the devil in the eyes, what else are you gonna think?
