This book instantly drew me in because of the unique style it’s written in. I loved the way we got a deep dive into so many characters’ lives, the side characters were so fleshed out that it felt like a very well constructed world because everyone had a personality no matter whether they were crucial to the main story or not.
The actual story was quite strange, mainly following Blandine and her experiences along with those of her three flatmates and their obsession with impressing her. I found myself slowing down a bit during the middle of the story because there were pages of just very long monologue-style paragraphs which weren’t really up my street and were about very existential thought patterns without being too relevant to the story- I get this was to reflect Blandine’s curious personality, but it was sometimes tough to get through.
Overall though, I think Tess Gunty has a lot of potential, her voice is unique and far from boring.
