This isn’t normally the kind of book I read, but something sung out to me in the title.
What I discovered is hard to articulate with a single word, and I found myself toying with the words poignant, sad, devastating, unfair... but actually, when I got to the end I realised it was so much more. It was about love ... a mother’s life, and the fight a girl with the heart and strength of a lion waged against the injustice of every woman in her nation.
For anyone wanting even the slightest insight into what life is like for women living under the Taliban regime, and in the sights of ISIS, this is heartbreaking, but in the same breath heartwarming in the sense that Homeric never wavered in her desire to fight.
A worthwhile read.

Heartbreak, anger, despair, admiration, fear, and some more anger are some of the feelings this book made me feel.
I can not fathom the courage and willpower that the women of Adganistan have, even to keep on living day after day let alone defy the worst face of patriarchy that ruled and still rules their country. I stand with the women of Afghanistan that see their dreams and hopes and dignity crushed once more, and I really hope that they will manage to live and leave this patriarchal hell behind.
I would love to read more stories by Dr Qaderi and other Afghani women. Happy, beautiful stories, with no fear and no tears.

*The book itself is beautifully written, informative and emotional in equal measure.

Goodness, what a life. It's heartrending but I'm proud and amazed by how far she's come. This is very well written memoir.
