I'd spent three years looking at this book on my shelf and thinking I ought to read it soon, and occasionally picking it up without actually starting it. And then I picked it up today and read the entire thing in one sitting, and it was perfect.

I flew through this in the best way possible. The pacing had great variety which kept me reading and never wanting to put the book down.
Spending so much time with Eva in her life made her feel so real to me and

when she started coming into her own and finding her place in the world. I cried my eyes out several times and pretty much all of the last 75 pages. The Rainbow book as a throughline was so clever as it kept the different mothers clear and built towards the final scenes.

I loved this so so much and will be thinking about it for a long time.

This book was actually passed onto me by my own mother, who insisted I would like it not because she liked it (she thought it was mediocre), but because I am a young woman and the main character is writing as a young woman and so she could not relate (!?) but I probably could. Through this simplified connection my mother has actually given me one of my favourite books of all time. I think this book will stay with me for a while, though she may never understand why.
