This is a charming book but I’m not sure there’s enough jeopardy or scale in the original story to create enough material for as good a writer as John Preston to turn this into something really special. The first third is very good, but the lack of a sufficiently compelling ending to the real story of Taylor & John at Watford, means the book never reaches the heights of Preston’s other work
