A beautifully drawn and colored surreal fantasy tale about a boy in search of a lost magical stone that grants a wish. While the art is beautiful, sometimes it got in the way of the story. The story seemed to lack direction in places, and the flashbacks were hard to follow (wasn't really sure why it had to be flashback-ed, as the story did not seem to gain from this plot tool). The basic structure of the plot was boy goes on quest, defeats or outwits or rallies various opponents to be able to continue on. Eventually, he unites the oppressed against the evil (misunderstood? mad?) king and literally wishes for the clouds to dissipate so everyone can once again see the sun. The allegorical aspects of the story were at times too subtle or muddled and at times too obvious and cloying. The writing tried to be grand in the European vein of narrating stories like this, which comes across as a bit heavy-handed, noir-ish or tense without any real tension. Overall, the story read more like a fable. Recommended for those who like tusks, dolphins, and sunlight.

Beautiful artwork, but the story didn't do it justice and by the end of the book it seemed like everything the art could try to do to hold my interest had been exhausted. A disappointing book.

Truly gorgeous but bombastic and trying so hard to be philosophical it’s hard to understand. Far more thin than it needed to be, and would have benefitted from character development.

Beautiful art, and an interesting story with a bittersweet ending. The timelines were sometimes a little difficult to follow, but I still loved it.
