Having not read any of this author before I probably missed out on some references to his older works as this is apparently a prequel to another series or two of his. That being said it was an enjoyable ride to see this master apprentice story play out where the bad guys and the good guys seem to be swapped during it's course.

Solid book and will be anticipating further reading.

This is not great but it’s not horrible. It had a very slow build and overall I’m happy that I read it but I will admit multiple times I was thinking why am I reading it.

FYI for all the reviews that say it’s just ends suddenly, it doesn’t. It ends like any other fantasy novel, an easy finish, that kind of wants you leaving more…

It starts promisingly enough, but about halfway through, as the main character sets out on her quest, the writing becomes dreadfully simplistic.
The second half of the book is a sequence of events with little in the way of embellishment or description. It might as well be a laundry list.

I love the strong, young female lead and enjoyed her finding herself. Her decisions felt on point, true to a young girl, and the fantasy aspect of the story was balanced enough to hold my attention (I’m a mystery reader typically). I must say, the end of the book was definitely not a stopping point. Good thing book 2 is already available!

This book took me back to the time I was reading epic fantasy for the first time. It had exactly the vibe I have been craving for a while in my fantasy reads, although it did start out a bit painfully.

I will not lie, Eliean annoyed the hell out of me for the first half of the book. Rightfully so, since she truly was a bit of a brat who has been brainwashed from her birth.

I feel like she still has some way to go to becoming utterly badass, but she is definitely headed into the right direction.

Oh, how I love me some well written female characters! ❤️

The rest of the cast is also quite well done and all of them have depths, be that good or nasty as hell. I was worried a bit at the beginning that we’ll be having another black and white, good versus bad type of story, but luckily it was a lot more nuanced than that.

And the magic system is as so soft, as a fluffy little kitten, giving me all sorts of whimsical, bubbly feelings. There is so much mystery in this world, it makes discovering it so exciting!

A beautiful book of self growth and discovery.
I have fallen in love with all the characters of this book. I had not known much about this book jumping into it but it seems like I have fallen into a world I have come to love. I do not want to ruin any of it, but I do suggest the audio book because the voice actor is amazing.
She makes it so immersive with all of her accents and tone of voice.
I will definitely be reading the rest of this trilogy!
