The only reason it's not a five is because miscommunication is one of my top 3 least favorite things to happen in a romance book - that being said, it made sense in the context of the story and the characters, and really worked with the story. This book reiterated that romance is so much more than tropes, and a "hot brooding villain" is fine if that's truly what you're looking for, but a genuinely good, kind man is always the best. Miles and Daphne actually belong together. This book sparked a long conversation with my husband about love and what it looks like and I just...ugh. I loved this book.

Daphne could be such a frustrating main character at times. I am not sure what to take from that.
I would have loved to read more of her and Miles’ relationship developing after she decides to stay (because we do see her make healthy choices, for herself) and learn how she grows. But then, I do believe that she learns and grows in the book already.

But it is a lovely story. And I believe the portrayal of the ways in which we can develop deeply ingrained patterns of thinking, as well as how those come out. It’s just frustrating to read - and it’s a shame the drama lasts somewhat longer than the rebuilding.

There is a reason I save new Emily Henry's for my birthday. It feels like a gift to go on these journeys with her characters.
I devoured this. I loved Miles and Daphne both seperately and together.
I'm going through a phase of personal growth and the way these characters reflect on their pasts and decide to do better for themselves is inspiring.

This is so Nick and Jess (from New Girl) coded except she's more reserved and he's more of a all round charmer.

Emily Henry just knows how to write 'em 💕 Her stories always feel real and honest and alive.

My absolute favorite part of Funny Story was how Daphne and Miles became best friends before anything more. Sure, the sexual tension was always there simmering, but they built a friendship before diving into those feelings. It's sad to rarely come across that in a book.

5 stars, a gold star, two thumbs up, and everything else in between for this one ✨️

This is Emily Henry at her best. With witty dialogue and loveable characters, she puts a charming, chaotic spin on the fake dating trope and tells a wonderful story of self-reflection and finding home. As always her characters feel real, the emotions are raw, and the descriptions are vivid enough to make you feel like you're really there, alongside Daphne.

This was the bookclub pick for September 2024.

The narrator was great. Kept me engaged and was able to give each person distinct voices and personalities.
