cute ending but i dont know about the rest. i almost feel like nothing even happened?? i love emily henry’s writing and how i can picture the entire book, but i don’t like how there is never much of a “story”. it felt a lot like all her other books with a pessimistic character and a lot of crying about everything from every character. as always i enjoyed the side characters and the humor that they brought to an otherwise negative sounding story. i did like miles but was disappointed in the lack of detail into his own struggles. daphne was insufferable at times but had valid feelings that seemed relatable as a reader. not my favorite from emily henry and definitely took longer to read than expected.

When her fiance, Peter, leaves her for his childhood best friend, Petra, Daphne finds herself knocking on the door of Petra’s ex, Miles’, door needing a place to stay. They mope around the apartment for a while, but for the most part, they carry on with their separate lives. That is until they receive wedding invitations from Peter and Petra.

In a panic, Daphne tells Peter over the phone that she and Miles are dating. Miles is more than happy to play along, in fact, he encourages the game. This results in them spending their summer weekends together. The more time they spend with each other and get to know one another, the lines of their real relationship begin to blur.

Honestly, I was terrified to pick up this book because I really didn’t enjoy Happy Place. I’m glad I finally gave Funny Story a chance because I think this is my new favorite from Emily Henry. I loved the dynamic between Daphne and Miles. Their differences/contrast suited their chemistry. I’m also a sucker for the fake dating trope. I enjoyed the side stories as well.

This is a sweet summer romance featuring opposite attractions.

Daphne uprooted her life in Richmond, Virginia and settled in Waning Bay, Michigan, her fiancé Peter's lakeside hometown. Their's was a great story until he realizes he's in love with his best friend Petra. Now Daphne is stuck in Waning Bay with no home or friends of her own, because her entire life revolved around Peter. She proposes to move in with the one person who understands her pain: Petra's ex-boyfriend Miles. The roommates avoid each other until one drunken night when they bond over being screwed over by their exes and decide to pretend to be a couple. The ruse becomes real when feelings develop.

This didn't grab me the way I expected. It wasn't dull enough to be DNF'd, but it took me longer than usual to finish, because I wasn't spellbound. I liked how well Daphne and Miles complement each other despite being so different. She's so buttoned-up, her coworkers at the library don't know anything about her. She has a hard time making friends while Miles can have a conversation with anyone. People are drawn to him. They both have complicated relationships with their parents (her father is not consistent and his mother cares more about what strangers think than her own family) that influence the way they approach relationships. She's afraid he'd bail and he's afraid he'll mess things up.

I enjoyed the banter between Daphne and Miles, but the back and forth drove me nuts, and then Miles does something stupid that makes things unnecessarily complicated. But there were times when I was touched by their struggles to accept that they are worthy of love and that it's not their fault that their parents are shit. It really makes you think of how much being abandoned/neglected as a child affects one's adult relationships.

It turns out Daphne and Miles have a lot more in common than previously realized. For them to work, they must learn to love their true selves. Daphne in particular must teach herself to be her own person. This book is a testament to how important it is to have your own life outside of your relationship.

I enjoyed this book, but it definitely has been the Emily Henry book that took me the longest to get through.

Emily Henry’s writing style makes you believe you are the main character and feel so fully immersed in their world that side characters don’t even feel like just side characters and you can feel every emotion the FMC/MMC is going through. Another heartbreakingly sweet love story about the main characters trying to find their place in the world and realising love isn’t always how you picture it. Miles is my favourite MMC that she has written, so observant and caring and kind and funny and charming and adorable! I cried again, I laughed a lot and loved the book overall. Not sure overall it’s taken the top spot of her books for me, but I still loved it and Miles is definitely my favourite.
