Tropes:
fake dating

“Do me a favor,” he says lightly, “and unlock your door.”
“Why?”
“So I can push you out as I peel out of this parking lot,” he says.

I'm still not sure where this book ranks in my overall Emily Henry list. It doesn't top Book Lovers (at this point I genuinely don't know if anything ever will), but do I like it more than Beach Read and Happy Place?

I had a lot of fun with it, for sure. Daphne and Miles are fun to follow. The trademark Emily Henry banter is present, and there were laugh out loud moments for me. I loved how their relationship developed, but I also appreciated how their personal issues were handled. I actually loved their third act fight, it had a few lines that had me buzzing. But I do think, overall, this was missing a little bit of magic.

When I think back on the book, I honestly don't remember much of the specifics or the emotions I had while reading, whereas with Happy Place, I don't think I'll ever forget how tense I felt while reading that book. But that doesn't make Funny Story bad. I was fully invested in them as a couple, and I loved Daphne and Miles as characters, so this is still a book I'm happy to recommend.

daphne vincent is a children’s librarian & miles nowak is a bartender. they’re friends, but they quickly become better friends when both of their partners leave them for each other

daphne moves in with miles, since her ex moved his new boo in with him & miles now has an extra room. they begin to hang out. amid becoming best friends, they also begin to develop stronger feelings for each other

this book has all the f’s - forced proximity, friends to best friends to lovers, and fake dating. and although this book has a lot of f’s, it gets an a+ from me! 🤭

peter & petra deserved each other. i absolutely hated them

the writing is absolutely beautiful. i love the connection & tension between daphne & miles. their friendship blossomed beautifully. i love all of the friend dates that they went on. and it was immediately palpable when the connection began changing from best friends to lovers

the only thing that kept this from being a 5 star for me was the miscommunication. there were a few instances that could’ve been quickly resolved if they just paused & talked to each other!

the miscommunication between miles & his sister was also something i disliked. she felt like she was bothering him & keeping him from his full potential and he felt like he was letting her down, meanwhile they both were soooo grateful for each other 🥹

this was my first emily henry & i cannot wait to dive into more! i listened to the audiobook for this book & really enjoyed it

This was easily my favorite book written by Emily Henry of all time. Emily has been one of my top three favorite authors for a long time now, but I think this book just solidified her as my all time favorite author. She never fails to disappoint me with her incredible plots, how hilarious her books are, and her insanely funny and random descriptions of things. I had been looking forward to reading this book for a long time, and it literally exceeded all of my expectations. It was such an enjoyable and engaging book that I will be thinking about for a long time after finishing it.

Daphne was such a hilarious FMC and I loved getting to hear her inner thoughts and see how she reacted to things. As I have already mentioned, some of the things that Emily Henry writes in her books are so random and hilarious, that I have no other way to describe them, other than saying they are simply unhinged. I both listened to the audiobook and read this book, as Julia Whelan is my favorite narrator ever. She is so hilarious, a perfect narrator for Emily’s books, and brings these characters to life perfectly. As I was both listening and reading, I was literally bursting out laughing so much. I was having the time of my life reading this book.

One thing I absolutely love about Emily Henry’s books, is the fact that they are so real. All of her plots truly come across as so believable and relatable. I just feel so happy when I am reading her books and they are such a great way for me to get lost in the pages of a book for hours. Then, as her stories progress, they reveal so much about the hardships of life, how to overcome our challenges, and they have such an emotional impact on me. I pretty much end up sobbing anytime I read one of her books, and this one did not fail to do that. In fact, I cried a couple times and teared up multiple times throughout my time reading this novel. I absolutely loved this book and it truly had me feeling all the things. I do not think that I will ever be able to forget this book.

The found family element, the library element, how much Daphne loved books and reading, the children’s librarian job Daphne had — Emily Henry knows exactly how to make all of her readers seen. These are all things that we can relate to so easily and bask in our love for them together. That is another thing I love about her writing — she always includes elements that allow all of us to relate to and cry over together.

Then Miles. Miles, Miles, Miles. One of my favorite book boyfriends of all time. He is so incredibly sweet, kind, generous, and understanding. He is so lovable and someone that I want to know in real life. He is actually the best.

I loved the set up for this book more than I have ever loved any other set up for one of her novels. It was so captivating and made me want to see how this whole thing was going to play out between Daphne and Miles immediately. The tension, the drama, the character growth — they were all incredible.
I loved being able to see both Daphne and Miles work out their flaws, and learn to simply accept themselves as they were, in order to love each other in the most effective way possible.

I could go on about this book for hours, but I will wrap this up now by saying that this is for sure my number one read of the year thus far. The ending was absolutely perfect. When I got to the end, I was sobbing so hard and just so happy. There is simply not a better ending out there, than the one we are given. I am so so grateful to have Emily Henry’s books to be able to escape into and to remind me of why I love reading and writing so much. I have said it before, but I will say it again. Emily Henry’s books remind me of why I want to be an author myself — to touch people in the way that her stories touch my heart. I rate this book 5/5 stars! 🌟
