This book was beautiful. I love the writing loved everything except the sexual content and the profanity but wow does Emily Henry know how to write a story.
I loved going through Daphne and Miles lives and seeing how they both started off so heartbroken and seeing how the blossomed and grew into people who eventually faced their fears, chose to hope instead of despair and chose to allow their negative emotions to show and trust how you're feeling and use that as a stepping stool not a dagger.

I devoured this. I loved Miles and Daphne both seperately and together.
I'm going through a phase of personal growth and the way these characters reflect on their pasts and decide to do better for themselves is inspiring.

I've been wanting to read Funny Story ever since it was published a couple months ago, and I hoped it would help me end the streak of lower than usual ratings. I always love a contemporary/romance with a bookish angle, and the premise of Emily Henry's newest story sounded promising. And I definitely ended up having a lot of fun reading this book! There is just something about the writing style that is addictive, and it was hard to put down. A good thing for me, considering the fact that I've been struggling with a beginning reading slump... The fact that both Daphne and Miles are extremely easy to warm up to helps of course, and most of the side characters are brilliant as well. Both main characters have been dealt a very rough card in life, and it was interesting to see how circumstances turned them into roommates and watch their connection grow. There are some cliches involved and the story was a bit high on the drama for me, but as a whole I can't deny that it gave the story more dept. The steamy scenes were definitely too much for me, but nothing that can't be skipped over if you are like me not a fan... Funny Story is not exactly lighthearted as it includes a selection of heavier topics, but there is still fun to be had and the banter is excellent. One of my favorites written by her!

I like Emily Henry’s books because they’re fun, quick reads that make you feel good. This one kind of reminded me of The Wedding Date by Jasmaine Guillory. Possibly only because they pretend to date and RSVP to their exes’ wedding together. I loved that Daphne is a librarian for children’s literary books. Miles works at a winery, which is fun too. I appreciate how much this book focused on building community and friendship outside of your partner. Like how she befriends Ashleigh and later Julia, Miles’ sister. She has no clue who she is after Peter breaks off their engagement for his best friend Petra. I like how she loved how he told their “meet cute” story because she felt like she wasn’t good at telling stories. Then at the end, Miles says “funny story” and lets her tell their meet cute because she loves to tell the story. Such a subtle detail. Kinda cheesy, and I love it.

Scruffy and chaotic—with a penchant for taking solace in the sounds of heart break love ballads —Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. The roommates mainly avoid one another, until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan. If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them?

There is no denying the popularity Emily Henry's book garner, yet none of them have been that memorable for me - until now. I was so excited when my local library finally got some new books that I immediately checked this one out before anyone else could. I read it on the train during my recent solo getaway to Quebec City and it was a case of the right book at the right time.
I wanted to escape into this universe so badly and become Daphne's bff. From the charming small town setting, to the endearing, well-crafted cast of characters (minus Peter and Petra), to the witty banter and laugh-out-loud moments, this book felt like a hug. Fake dating can oftentimes be a struggle for me, yet it wasn't overdone here. Daphne and Miles' chemistry was believable and I loved all of the little details, like Daphne being a librarian and Miles' job at the winery.
What Emily Henry does so well is go beyond the romance. In fact, I wouldn't say the romance is the central focus at all here. Rather she explores past childhood trauma, very real insecurities, and making new friends as an adult - all topics that I related and which connected me to the story on a deeper level.
With Funny Story I finally understand all of the hype surrounding Emily Henry's books - this is easily my favourite (thus far) and will encourage me to continue to pick up her new releases in the future. It was a quick and enjoyable experience, especially tandem reading with the audio read by Julia Whalen who brings the characters to life with her narration.
