I don’t even know how to begin. This was one of the best books I have read in 2024, well-worth the wait. Emily Henry has done it again.

If life weren’t so busy, I would have finished this way sooner. I loved the vibes immediately - every Emily Henry book feels like a warm hug. I loved Miles, his Nick Miller vibes, his love for his sister. I love Daphne, her job as a children’s librarian, her relationship with her mom. Their dynamic with the witty banter and yet their soft sides. The characters feel so real and relatable - and I've been there before too, at least with regards to the loss of someone I had loved and built my life around. I love how every character Emily Henry writes feels like a parallel to her other books and yet fresh, with new voices.  I gobble this stuff down all the time.

I love that Miles and Daphne’s dynamic developed as a strong friendship which set a foundation for a strong romantic relationship. I love when that time is taken to develop and it feels like a natural progression. And I love that we see Daphne's life, not just her romance with Miles - slice-of-life stories are my fave, can you tell? We are focused on her career and her feelings about Waning Bay and her friendships that she forms. And yet it is so fun to see the things that she does with Miles as he shows her around and how they serve as terrific foils for one another! I hate Daphne and Mile's exes so much and I'm glad they normalize the grieving that happens when people deeply hurt you like this.  Many times, people say, “I forgive them and wish them the best,” but Miles and Daphne were HURT and they needed to feel that grief and pain and anger that is so natural in a situation like this.

I also just loved the journey Daphne embarked on about discovering she needs to be her own person, realizing she had been tied up in a guy's identity for so long. So relatable, as I had the same situation in my early 20s and it feels less lonely to know it can happen at any age. I love that friendship helps her find herself, and even Miles does that. They help EACH OTHER! Daphne learns things about herself, and Miles comes to terms with things about himself and his too! In coming to terms with their pain and realizing that love can be a risk, the two of them found what was meant for one another as people - their so-called perfect relationships didn't help them grow and bring out the best in one another, the way that Miles and Daphne were able to do as friends and an eventual couple. Their slow burn is incredibly well-written, engaging, and enjoyable. I shed many tears towards the end, as the love between those two made my heart joyous.

The book is perfectly paced and I savored in every page. I also love the lack of miscommunication and how everything that occurs feels realistic. An amazing read, no doubt. Here is my current ranking of Emily Henry books by the way (note that they are all 5/5 for me, so I still love all of them):
1. Book Lovers
2. Funny Story
3. Happy Place
4. People We Meet on Vacation
5. Beach Read

Thank you for reading this doozy, and thank you, Emily Henry, for sharing this delightful story with us!

I said it would be hard to beat People We Meet on Vacation, but she’s done it! This was a truly perfect romance novel. I’m so glad I read it while traveling for vacation. The relationships between the two love interests, the relationship they each have to themselves, and to their friends/families is both believable and realistic. I loved this one and I hope these characters are in love for ever and ever in fictional Michigan.
