This was an incredibly well-written and interesting historical nonfiction outlining a major precursor to the Civil War; it offers a deep look at the life of John Brown and much of what surrounded the raid on Harpers Ferry.

This book was emotional and engaging. I didn’t give it a 5 star rating because at times it could be repetitive - normal in nonfiction for readers that don’t read the whole book and for books with lots of detail - but there was lots of repetition and reminding.

I read this book to accompany a trip to Harpers Ferry - I’d recommended this for folks that don’t know a lot about Civil War history, are interested in studies on violence vs. non-violence, and forms of abolitionism.
