3.5.
I loved the concept of this. The concept and worldbuilding was really good in this book. The cover is beautiful. I liked the characters all being morally grey. The writing wasn’t as bad as some people made it out to be but it was a little vague at times and could’ve used some editing. There was so much potential and I think it somewhat hit the points for me but i think I was expecting more with the hype.
This reminded me so much of The Library at Mount Char, but less weird and dark.

I found the characters boring. Their cynicism and manipulations were just boring. The telepath was super irritating in the way she used sex to manipulate. I think maybe dark academia isn’t for me.

This was just not good.

The premise itself was a good idea—6 magicians (medi-whatsits) brought in to a secret society where one wi ultimately become eliminated.

500 pages later and I’m left feeling so underwhelmed. The real twist happens in the second to last chapter and it’s probably the most interesting bit. Aside from that, it was really uninteresting.

First impressions : the characters seem a bit one dimensional (and quite annoying, not in a loveable way) and the banter between them stiff and juvenile. The pacing is glacial, and the plot late to appear. I liked the idea of the Alexandrian society mentioned in the introduction, but it doesn't seem to be developped much yet.
Only silver lining so far: I want to learn more about Gideon (through Nico's perspective)

This felt like a fever dream. Like you think it makes sense but it actually makes no sense. I literally couldn't tell you what it was about. Two stars because I think the world has promise but the execution was a painful trudge. I kept having to read back thinking I had missed things, but really they were just out of left field.
