An unwieldy, teetering thing - Second Place is so many things at once, its 180 pages a dizzying marriage of symbols, musings, and hazy atmosphere.

It's like Lynch and Garland had a literary baby, and that baby had a baby with a philosophy prof who has a penchant for picking at their life like an oozing scab.

It's off, it's indeterminate, it's here and nowhere. Is L a representation of the author's artistic self indulgence? Her desire for approval from unyielding male authorities? Is he the serpent to her Eve? Cusk cleverly assembles enough thoughts and images to make you pinch your temples.

She could be accused of self indulgence, in the way conjoined twins could be accused of being awfully close - no shit, yeah? For the work to be what it is, it needs to toe a line. It needs to wade through fog so you can puzzle out an image in the mist, and see what that reveals about you.

Still though, I can't deny that some of these sentences were unsightly beasts, esoteric little run-ons that make you do a quadruple-take before shrugging and moving on.

a thought provoking rendering of an uncomfortable situation dealing with relationships, gender roles, and creating art

I really enjoyed the different explorations of being a woman in this book, especially of being a mother and a daughter. The writing was mesmerizing (but sometimes I found myself dozing off). I had no idea what to expect but I really enjoyed this book.
