This book had some great quotes but also bored or annoyed me at times. I was having trouble organising my thoughts and came across a review that described it perfectly: that there is a fine line between brilliance and pretentiousness, which Rachel Cusk walks in this novel. For me, ultimately, the pretentiousness of 'M' was a bit too much. Having said that, this book does have some good thought-provoking parts as well. It is not a bad book but it didn't work for me.

Read for January @mtlbookclub. Sometimes a bit too philosophical and arty? But loved the hommage at the end, and really enjoyed the depth of the characters. Gotta love Cusk’s font !

Pleasingly detached in style and quite well-written. Emotional though it doesn’t seem to be so at first glance, and the characters flitting in and out of the story made sense for this type of book. Delightfully liberal with the exclamation points. I really enjoyed reading this and want to read more from Cusk!

exquisite writing and could almost see it play out as a movie in my head… there was just something i couldn’t quite grasp about it… will definitely reread this someday!

Very philosophical and I felt kind of stupid at points when the philosophical ramblings lost me but overall a really interesting read! I found the views of art and motherhood grabbing my attention a lot.
