Eerie, reflective, strange, annoying, relatable and unrelatable, about life, self-image, (failed) expectations, motherhood and relationships with others and oneself. This was my first encounter with Cusk before committing to her Trilogy - and I wasn't disappointed.

the prose was pretentious—some gem pages but not redeeming enough—and the story was entirely founded on the narrator’s world of insecurities. the whole “jeffers” thing was ridiculous. the character development beyond the narrator was decent, but otherwise this was a miss for me

the way this story was narrated was super interesting and i like how it felt very intimate, like gossip. the characters were fully formed which i often find lacking in a book told through a strain of consciousness such as this one is!
