rachel, i know i will not do your book justice since im sure i have read this at the wrong time in my life. it took me a long while to finish this but i did enjoy it in the end. some parts, including this Jeffers character, were rather confusing. going to do some research after writing this review
Known widely for her ‘Outline’ trilogy, Rachael Cusk delivers a peculiar but ultimately fulfilling work of fiction with ‘Second Place’. I’ve always wanted to read Cusk, praise for her distinctly modern writing style and literary flair is clearly evident in ‘Second Place’. The narrator, who feels as if she is not the protagonist of the story, invites a mysterious famed artist to her remote home. Introspection from the narrator, as informed from the characters she interacts with, provides a thought-provoking and high-quality literary fiction that is still easily accessible. It struck me as similar to the zeitgeist of other contemporary authors like Ali Smith and Max Porter. I’m keen to read the ‘Outline’ trilogy and look forward to what else Rachael Cusk has in store.
