This was SO GOOD, kind of in a depressing way, but mostly in an inspiring way. The problem, of course, is that it's not quite preaching to the choir, but it's preaching to the congregation, so I'm not sure how many people it will reach and change, but still. Excellent ideas, and I'm definitely going to try to live more ethically from now on.

I enjoyed this book, but feel like I have traveled down this road with Singer before. It's a great book that I would highly recommend if you haven't read his essays about poverty, but there's not a lot new here if you have.

boy is this book full of guilt-tripping. yes, i read it for a class and that definitely affects this.

6/14/ I think this book will encourage me to donate more than I currently do, but I don't think I'm prepared to make a vow of poverty akin to what Franciscan monks do.

A summary: "You spent money to read this book and you probably drink soda or water occasionally, so you're murdering children. Now I'm going to throw a million statistics in your face to show you that I'm right and you're living your life wrong. Here's how much you need to donate. Do it or you're a bad person (did I mention you murder children?).The end."

Really don't understand why this got so many positive reviews when the entire book was literally demanding people donate more money. I think everyone knows that it's good to donate, I didn't enjoy being yelled at by this narrative.

An excellent book and argument for anyone looking to motivate better giving. Singer makes some hard arguments and has a strong moral interpretation throughout his argument. Overall, I think the book is a great aid to people looking for more motivation toward generosity and for people who might want support in humanitarian charity goals.

Not recommended for those who don't wish to be inspired to make a difference in the world.

This is a must. read. Life changing, life altering, life affirming. I am not exaggerating - please read this and pass it on.

Although I really enjoyed this book, and the look at our "morality", and many ethical questions looked at...there were times I felt guilty for living the life I lead. Having said that, I absolutely LOVED this book. It puts numbers to a global problem, and for me that makes every little bit of my life a bit less "necessary".

Other than setting a "public standard" of charity donation, this book helps those who donate to charity evaluate which charities to donate to. It definitely gave me some insight as to how to better evaluate different NGO's and government organizations alike, while at the same time, making a difference in a 3rd world country.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has donated to charities in the past, and anyone who has thought they were unable to donate in the past. It's easy for us to donate...sometimes we just need a little nudge, and Peter Singer definitely provides that nudge!
