This series is getting really intense! This one had me on the edge of my seat and feeling uneasy in a few places. I was practically screaming at the villain for half of it. The characters are so well-developed, and even though it was shorter than I thought, it was definitely darker and left a bittersweet taste in my mouth.

4 Stars. But perhaps my least favorite of the series. That tells you how good Lehane is. It was slow and maybe a bit too long but the mystery held strong until the end for the most part. It was obvious but cleverly disguised. K&G along with Bubba were as good as I’ve come to expect. Just one more left the series. That’s too bad.
Finished off the Kenzie and Gennaro series with this one. (I started with #6 because someone it to gave me in a box of books and I didn't know it was part of a series.) This is one of the better stories--in fact 4, 5, and 6 are, to my mind, better than the first three. Well-plotted. Good characters. Bad guys so bad you don't care what they get by way of punishment. Less violence (though "less" is a comparative term, not an absolute one) than some of the others, and less tolerance demanded of the readers for clearly immoral actions on the part of the so-called good guys. I enjoyed the series and recommend it to fans of the detective thriller.

Whereas the last volume carried more weight than usual (and it heartily worked), this one swung the other way (and it was as if the rhythm was off). There was a lot to be delighted by, as always—great world, great characters—but things didn't quite add up for me on this one. I understood decisions less, dots connected more vaguely, and there was a glib quality to scenes I haven't observed in the previous four entries. The opening chapters felt a bit like the vacation episode of a TV series, and throughout it radiated like later seasons where characters come off as exaggerated versions of themselves. But it was a ripper to be sure. Only got qualms because it came off a five-star streak.

Another book in the Kenzie/Gennaro series. This wasn't as good as Gone Baby Gone, but it was still very interesting and kept my interest. Lehane creates such great characters.
