DNF. Not compelling. I didn't fully believe the historical 'facts'. Edmonds was a female posing as male.....but she didn't engage in any of the front line battles while I read the book, so being in the back and attending to the wounded sounds kind of like someone posing as a doctor or nurse. Each of the four,I couldn't gather sympathy for their story. Finally I abandoned the book. This isn't a review, but I needed to put a end to pretending, to stop having this on my nightstand.
Four incredible stories, and tons of historic information, but suffered from the fact the stories weren’t interconnected in any meaningful way and fractured storytelling. Frequently one story would end on a cliffhanger with an abrupt transition to the next story, with no resolution or advancement until three chapters later when it was that character’s turn again. Just finishing one narrative at a more logical endpoint and having each chapter represent a new narrative thread would’ve improved the pacing immensely.

Surprisingly engaging for historical non-fiction. I kept confusing a couple of characters (Rose and Belle both seemed similarly impetuous at times), but most of them were surprisingly well rounded through their words and deeds. The author has a true gift for bringing history alive. The way she left it, a book on women gaining the vote or during WW2 would make sense.
A bit slow to start, otherwise a meticulously researched and masterfully told story.

I am so impressed w the research this author has done. I would have liked it more written as historical fiction than as the non fiction it was.

This was a really long book and the narrator for the audiobook is not great, so I definitely zoned out at times. However, I did really enjoy the stories of these incredible women! While I do feel like the stories were written in a way that made it feel disjointed, there is a lot of information here about women that have been forgotten! I loved that women became spies during the Civil War and where they would hide notes and maps (it’s wild!) but also the fact that some disguised themselves as men to go fight in the war! Hello Disney - make THEIR story a movie!👏🏼
