This book was a gift. I never would have picked this up on my own, but I'm very glad it was given to me. This was a pretty quick read as well. I absolutely loved the format of the writing, with the same story starting at 2 separate times sort of weaving in and out of each other. I felt attached to the characters and was eager to keep reading. It was also extremely refreshing to read something from the perspective of someone I wouldn't usually consider. These are the types of books that expand peoples' minds to the world beyond their own, and for that I'm grateful.

Why this story of Nuri and Afra spoke to me more than the countless other stories about people who are living through incredible hardship, I don't know. But as the book was ending, I found myself sobbing as I thought about the pain that these characters lived through. This book is fiction, but for countless people, the stories are real-life accounts of the nightmarish situations that they've had to live through. I cannot imagine what that is like. I simply cannot fathom these horrible experiences.

But there is hope. And I hope that others can read this book and have an eye opening moment where they can understand that we should not judge or turn a blind eye to the suffering that others have experienced.

I may have had too high expectations for this one. This book has been hyped up and I expected nothing short of 'A thousand splendid suns' level. I just couldn't relate all that much to the story, which seemed so very artificially constructed. It's not a bad read, and I did finish it. But I doubt I will remember it to the end of my days.

What else can I say about this that hasn't already been said? Heartbreaking, poignant and reflective. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was wonderful and added a lot of dimension to the story.
