A quick suspenseful read for high schoolers. Most of the book is spent in the mental anguish of Janie as she contemplates that her parents may be kidnappers. I managed to piece together the ending a few chapters before it was revealed but overall a nice read I suppose.

I should clarify that the four-star rating is from my 11-year-old self. My friends and I all read this book together in sixth grade and we loved it.

I read an old edition . . . hopefully it's been updated a bit, otherwise it's super-dated and I'm not sure why it's still in print. Uses some out-of-taste terminology. It's a good character exploration, but there's not much action. Sometimes the narrative is clunky but sometimes it's very poignant.

I read this when I was 13? 14? And remembered loving it so I did a re-read and while this book definitely was not a master-peace by any means it was nice to re-read it as an adult, and a parent. I
am not sure what I loved so much about it back then other than the mystery of why her face was on a milk carton, and I didn’t remember all that much about the plot but it was fun trying to guess and remember.

I didn't like this very much. I can see how it would scratch the itch of an older kid who wonders if everything is actually as it seems. It's still not very well written, and the fact that it's meant for young adults is not an excuse. "They'll think we went to a motel to learn about sex." WHAT? Who talks like that? I might have liked this more if I'd read it in middle school, but I didn't.

I read the second book in the series first because this was one banned at my (Catholic) middle school. For sexual content. Even though there was no real sexual content. I felt like such a rebel when I got it from the public library and read it on school property.

Four stars for fond memories. Caroline B. Cooney was one of my favorite authors during my middle school years and I still own all the books in this series.
