Couldn't finish it. It reads like a mediocre parody of all the most hackneyed aspects of fantasy fiction.

Ok, first, this ends in a unsatisfying way, I suppose to lead one into the series, but really it just left me annoyed. I needed closure at least emotionally with at least one story arc.

Secondly, the illustrations at the beginning of the chapters do not match the chapter leads, which really really annoyed me for some reason.

Overall, the book was interesting, filled with dinosaurs, and a far more realistic European world than I expected. Nice language work, pretty understandable politics, and some interesting twists and turns.

For fans of 14th century Europe, and dinosaurs (!).

Great fun, dinosaurs, knights, jousting... beautiful women and handsome men.

I liked in particular the conquistador/Spanish empire and the rich forests setting

So disappointed. The hype just did not live up to reality.

So I just read Dinosaur Lords. It's really overtly sexist and I like it in spite of that. I am hoping the girls get better and the main chauvinist shapes up and that dinosaurs eat more people in the next book.

Also...more Pilar. And Shiraa. And Montse. I appreciate your attention in this matter, Mr. Milan.

George R.R. Martin's blurb should read, "This is a hot mess but still better than my stuff." I loved the detailed world-building here, the energy of the story, and lots of the characters (Lord Karyl, Rob, Melodia, Jaume and the Companions are all really interesting). Also, the book is full of AWESOME DINOSAURS.

It's a hot mess because the plot is sometimes random and incomprehensible, particularly at the end of the book, characters (especially the Emperor and Falk) sometimes act randomly and incomprehensibly, the dialogue (with its mix of modern and "medieval") can be clunky, and the book really really needs little visuals of the different types of dinosaurs (or a glossary), because it is confusing to visualise what each dinosaur is supposed to look like.

It's a very uneven story, but I enjoyed it.

So badly wanted this to be good. Too much overdone drama coming from human characters, and we don't know them well enough to care about their angst, at least not as early in the book as it shows up. Felt like it was written as a medieval battle tale, then the horses were all changed to dinosaurs to make it less boring. Didn't work, still boring. A rare DNF.

This book is genuinely terrible, and I only finished it because I was dragged by a friend. Reading it aloud really makes it clear how clunky the writing is. You can barely enjoy the presence of dinosaurs because they're always called stupid nicknames that are hard to keep track of.
