Alossa's behavior throghout was so rank and I hated that we were only allowed to feel pain or anger or any emotion if she was feeling it. Lots of things happen only as shock factor or to justify Alossa's decisions so at one point it I stopped wondering about the plot and just let myself carry forward because clearly there is only one captain to this ship and it's the author. Some research into sailing was made, but I wish the author had researched more into pirates and their war strategies in a book this heavy with action.
In the first book it's not that obvious too but I don't like the way this series portrays men as evil and dangerous and the language, plus some of the gendered mechanics of mermaids rubs me the wrong way.

My feelings for this book are stronger than the first one. I loved the character development, both in terms of Alosa’s relationship to her father and her relationship to Riden. We got to see more of Riden’s motivations too. I really hated the miscommunication trope and feel like both Alosa and Riden were bad listeners and also bad communicators for the first half of the book. But eventually they started talking lol. This book was definitely more gruesome than the first one, and I gasped out loud multiple times. I’m glad with how it all turned out, and how the story wrapped up nicely. What an adventure of a story! So many twists and turns.

I loved both of these books so much, my only criticism is that we don't really get an end for Ryle and Alosa. I wish we got to see some parts of them together before the book ended but I loved it either way.

[NO SPOILERS]
such a good fantasy read. i would highly recommend for ages 15 and above. please check the content warnings before reading though. it might be too overwhelming for some people. i would not recommend this book as like the very first book you read as a teen. start with something more lighthearted and easy to read. read this after like 5 different books or so. its a really good book for getting into fantasy though!

(the content warnings i've put is for both the first and second book of this duology)

This was such a fun, quick, summer read! I read it in two days and when I wasn’t reading it - I was wishing I was reading it. I love the characters and their relationships. The found family in this book is so heartwarming and I love how the writing style pushes the plot forward. It was a good break from some heavier memoirs I’ve been working through. My only qualm was the slow-burn romance that really never had a big moment. I also feel it is a tad unresolved with some of the smaller characters but possibly that will be sorted out in the companion novel coming out in November! I just love a YA happy ending book that leaves you feeling good. Highly recommend to all.
