I am one of the few that actually prefered the first part, since I liked the main characters' chemistry a bit more. Still a really good and easy book to read, not bad by any standard.

I enjoyed this installment more than the first novel.  Elosa's character becomes more developed and the reader can admire the ways in which she grows, takes care of her crew, and learns to deal with her emotions.  There is still a lot of violence and death, which, for some reason strikes me as callous and ruthless in a way it doesn't on a TV or movie.  However, it seems less out of place in book two, since it thematically aligns with the way in which sirens are contradictions, innocent in some ways despite their survival relying on manipulation and murder.

This did exactly what it needed to for me: it was entertaining and fun to read. However, I felt no sense of tension.
The characters said exactly what they meant and wanted and felt, except Alosa. Levels of clear communication and self-awareness that would be commendable in real people but all the conflict that is supposed to come from those missed connections just evaporated with little to replace it.
Riden
did all his emotional work off-page. Characters just disappeared -
Draxton and Theris/Vandorn
: who knows what happened to them! For characters that were such threats in the previous book, they were dealt with so easily that it felt rushed. Was it? Was there supposed to be a missing book in the middle where they hunted down
Theris
? Who knows, but it's not here now.
Again, entertaining, kept me engaged enough to read it in a day, but when the only moment I felt tense was when
a child got shot in the head
- in a pirate book! I'm not impressed.
It's a shame because I did enjoy all the individual tropes, this should have been an easy win. Just goes to show, tension serves a purpose.

Not only is she the daughter of the pirate king but she’s the daughter of a siren. This comes with all types of special abilities. She also finds herself falling for a man who doesn’t care that she’s a siren but also doesn’t want her to use her abilities on him. Can they find the treasure island without facing the wrath of the pirate king? What about the sirens, their calls are coming louder now.
