I've found an affinity for pirate books over the past few years, and particularly ones with female main characters. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but I think I actually preferred this one. There was more depth to the characters and the story drew me in right from the beginning. I would love to see this series eventually get adapted for a film or TV series, and the author definitely provides plenty of material to work with. This was some of the best multi-layered storytelling I've read in a while.

I enjoyed this sequel a lot more than the first book. Alosa, the main character, is a fiery, passionate powerhouse of a captain, and I loved seeing how she leads her crew of primarily female pirates. I think this is a big difference that made this book better than the first — we see Alosa in her element amongst her crew and she shines even more as a strong female protagonist. I liked learning more about her siren powers, but was left wanting a bit more sometimes. I still have questions about her warring natures and how she was able to overcome her “monstrous” siren ways fairly easily with the help of her true love (which she doesn’t admit to being into for far too long in my opinion). Overall, this story had a bit more excitement and character development that made for a fairly quick read.
