3.5-4/5 stars!

I can't tell which book in the series I enjoyed more. Both are super fun and adventurous.

Pros of this book:
- You get to see more of what it's like for Alosa to be half-siren, as it focuses more on her mother and their whole siren story. I loved how Alosa's siren crew ended up saving the crew and defeating the men belonging to the Dragon's Skull
- Her father (an asshole) is finally killed by none other than the Siren Queen
- I feel like there are more action scenes in this book. The Dragons Skull (her father's ship) hunts her and her crew down while traveling to the Isla de Canta. Their ships face off a few times when the Dragon's Skull eventually catches up to Alosa's ship; this all kept me wanting to read as I was on the edge of my seat
- More emotional, as you see some of her crew members fall during the fighting
- Chapters aren't very long
- SHE FINALLY SPEAKS TO RIDEN ABOUT HER FEELINGS
- I like the element of using Riden as the way to keep Alosa human when she is submerged in water, fighting to keep the siren-man-killer part out of her

Cons of this book:
- My god Alosa STOP BEING A DICK TO RIDEN. It drove me crazy. The last book was simply more banter between the two; this was just straight up 300 pages of Alosa repressing her feelings for Riden and being an asshole to him. This boy would give her his whole heart, expressing all his feelings and she would turn her shoulder and make up some excuse about attending to her crew. And in a way, I get it, especially bc she was highly abused by her father so of course that's given her a harder time being vulnerable. But still, that doesn't mean she can be an asshole to this boy who clearly loves her and will do anything for her. Drove me CRAZYYYYYY like just admit you LIKE HIM.
- To go along with the first, all of a sudden Alosa admits to loving Riden. It was literally the one time she explains having any slight feelings for him, and she says she loves him?? Idk, it seemed SO rushed, especially bc even with some of her inner dialogue you never REALLY hear the true way she thinks of him bc she's always denying it.

Overall, this was such a fun fantasy/adventure book. I definitely recommend, especially for the summertime!

Omg I absolutely love these books, such a fast read too!

Daughter of the pirate king was a bit more intriguing imo but this was still great!

Not at good as Daughter of the Pirate King, for the pure reason that there is less Riden. Like there is 75% less Riden in this book. I don't know about you but Ms. Levenseller's writing and plot is not why I read her books. They are my guilty pleasure. I read these for the romance and thats it. So I give this book 2 stars because there is less romance. Literally Daughter of the Pirate King ends with the assumption that Riden and Alosa will be immediately romantically engaged. The first time we really see them have a moment is 150 pages in. Thats a literal 3rd of the book. Levenseller is talented at creating good moments that you can almost watch play out in your head, but for me, I wanted more romance and immediate gratification. Still worth the read tho.

It was a good book but I feel like I just didn’t connect with the characters as much or care for them as much. Obviously I’ve had over a year break from the first book so I feel like if I read it closer I would have preferred it.

so much happens that it is actually pretty intense. this is definitely more heavy hitting and emotional than the prior book, same with the romance. i’m glad we got to see alosas crew and more to do with her family. i still have a lot of questions, though. i can’t talk about too much as it would spoil events from the first book too but just to note, this duology (i know the third book follows sorinda and kearan so idk if it’s technically a duology?) is so worthwhile to read if you like pirates. it’s so fun and fast paced that you’ll forget you’re reading.

“I am an outsider. The life I could have had with all of you was taken from me, but I am here now by choice. Will you not choose to rally with me now? I braved the ocean for you. Will you brave land for your queen?”
