An interesting story - though more police investigation than historical fiction. A good read, except it lost something when Deaver translated the German into English (ex. the German Third Empire, instead of the Third Reich.)

Wasn't bad, wasn't good either. But I forgive you Deaver. This was one of your earlier books.

This is one of those rare books that stays interesting, adventurous, and unpredictable, all throughout the story. There was not a single moment I got bored with this book. Characters were well developed, several paths of the story remained connected, and no cookie-cutter style scenes and dialogues occurred. Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and this one didn't disappoint. Story takes a couple of interesting turns at the end... all for the better. This story was more about navigating through a man's conscience as he wrestles with and processes what is the right and wrong thing to do considering his mission and the time and place at which he lives. Mystery, intrigue, espionage, romance, adventure, and even a dash of comedy sprinkled in (Webber was a comic). What a wonderful way to start the new year with a 5-star review of what is now one of my favorites.

Unusual setting for a modern thriller in pre-WW2 Nazi Berlin, with ‘personal appearances’ by Hitler, Göring, Goebbels et al. An American hitman is sent to Berlin to take out the man who is rebuilding Germany’s military. Weak and somewhat nebulous pretext for storyline but the characters in the action-packed and twisting story are well drawn and authentic. The background of societal and political break-up and brutalisation under Hitler and his henchmen is especially well realised.

Jeffery Deaver never fails to deliver.

If you need your fix of Nazi thrillers, this is a good choice. Interesting story line, set in pre-war Nazi Germany. An American mobster (hit man), some truly interesting German characters (con man, police detective, and a spattering of your big name Nazi bad guys). Combine this with an well executed plot, involving the Olympics, a planned hit, and a murder investigation, and throw in some truly did-not-see-that-coming plot twists, and you have an excellent and entertaining read.

Another gripping thriller from Deaver, but this time with a historical setting. Berlin 1936 - a city full of Olympic fever and Nazi fervour. New York hitman Paul Schumann is given the opportunity to clear his slate by carrying out one last job - to kill a high-ranking colonel and thus delay or prevent German rearmament.

Deaver is the king of unexpected plot twists, and Garden of Beasts is no exception. But he also shades the story beautifully to illustrate the moral dilemmas and choices that good people must make in bad situations, as well as showing the everyday face of evil. Completely unputdownable!
