I haven’t read an Elle Kennedy book in awhile and this read was solely because I already had it downloaded and was on a plane. But that time away from these books very much made a difference— her prose is back to being jarring. Reading college hockey fuckboy internal monologues makes me so terrified of white men. These men in particular in these books are given so many passes for shitty things that it makes me sick.

FWB to lovers generally gets me so I was invested in the story and there’s a twist later on that I definitely didn’t think would happen but was surprised by how inevitable it felt and how well it challenged both Dean and Allie. The character development was definitely there and I appreciated seeing how both of them worked through this period in their lives. Dean’s career shift because of something he wasn’t even excited about doing initially warmed the heart :,)

There was a moment where Kennedy makes a race related joke. Since she’s a white woman, it was uncomfortable for me to read and didn’t feel necessary at all. Kennedy has issues outside of racism that were also present in this book including wlw fetishization and fatphobia. These books are mindless but there comes a time when I’m like I don’t…….want to be supporting an author like this.

A pretty normal college hockey romance. Everything about how Dean and Allie first get together though is pretty fantastic. Nothing about the end-of-book drama/third-act breakup felt overwhelming to me, but trigger warnings for grief and death of an important side character.

A groan lodges in my throat. My Friday night went from hot threesome sex to babysitting my best friend's girlfriend's best friend. (Dean's POV, 12)
