From the cover, it was easy to see this would be a retelling of Stephen King’s Carrie. I loved it. I loved the story but didn’t care for the way the story was told through interviews. Really great way to study race. Another book I would like to teach to high school students. Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure Texas has banned good book in the schools. Grrr…for that reason alone, I’m upgrading this to a five.

If you love horror movies, especially those considered Classic Horror Movies (such as Carrie), READ THIS BOOK! And if you are able to read audiobooks, get the audiobook, you will thank me later.

This book is told in an epistolary type style, where there's fragments of current day podcasts, court proceedings, interviews, and hospital accounts mixed in with the main story line. This book tackles so many good topics and themes and is such a good reimagining/retelling of Carrie. This story is told in many POVs, but the way these POVs are balanced is so expertly done as it doesn't confuse or muddle the story or characters at all. Each of these characters is so distinct and able to stand apart from the rest so well. Just absolutely perfect, I can't imagine anything making this book better.

This reimagined version of Carrie was, to say the least, incredible!! It took everything from Carrie but twisted it to focus on race relations, the glorification of whiteness, and the vilifying of blackness.

The author uses multiple POVs, including a podcast, to tell the story of Maddy Washington—a biracial girl who has passed as white for years until her hair got wet one day, exposing her ethnicity. From there, Maddy is bullied, and, feeling white guilt, some of her classmates decide to integrate their segregated proms. Through all of this, Maddy discovers she has abilities and learns how powerful she really is.

I loved this reimagining and the way it made me think about white guilt and white saviorism.

The ending where Maddy’s “devilish” abilities were revealed to be from her white side was SO CLEVER. I love the metaphor the author used there since Maddy had thought that evil part of her came from her black ancestors and had years of brainwashing from her father to believe whiteness to be the ultimate goal. What a twist and way to show the vilification of blackness and the true hatred that comes with it.
