This would be a lovely book for a parent to share with a child as a celebration of family, family history, and family culture. There's warmth and love radiating from this, reassuring said child that they have a place in the world. '

The author and illustrator notes make it personal.

This is obviously a labor of love for the author and illustrator and I think that comes through. That being said, this is an affirmation book, which is one of my least favorite genres in the picture book market. Giving it an extra half star because I like the family history and Mandarin integrated throughout and the illustrations are pleasing. I didn't think the writing was very strong, though the writer obviously has talent. Seems to tick some of the same boxes as [b:Eyes that Kiss in the Corners|53327864|Eyes that Kiss in the Corners|Joanna Ho|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1593216134l/53327864._SX50_.jpg|81758531], which I liked much better. Not that you can't enjoy both, I just am not a big fan of this style of picture book—I like stories!

If you are looking for more books featuring Asian children, here are some of my favorites:

Lovely text and illustrations.

I Am Golden is a book about the beauty and power of a young girl named Mei. Mei may be different from other children, but her family is there to support and empower her as a person. Mei has a golden flame inside her that is different from everyone else. That flame is what makes her unique and powerful. I would love to have this book in my future classroom because of the incredible message it brings. I would use it as an empowering message for any student that may not feel represented of that they belong in the classroom.

Beautiful and honest. An absolute joy, inspiring and a must read. The words and the art are equally inspiring.

A sweet love letter from a parent to child as an ode to the author’s parents. Could be a great model to ask students to write about their own families and what parts of them they carry inside that makes them golden, too.

This book showed the beauty of Asian American culture and children. It’s essentially a love letter from parents to a little girl, and I thought it was precious. I would have this in my classroom as a positive outlook on different cultures and their family dynamics
