I don't know how Levin so accurately predicts and writes about women's greatest fear (or at least my greatest fear): losing absolute control over their body. This is just another tale he's told that scared the pants off of me and made me question everyone. Ev-ery-one.

Slow start, but that makes the ending even better. Could not put down during the third act, and the final chapter ends on a perfectly erie note.

I picked up this book after listening to the podcast episode on You're Wrong About discussing the ways that we allude to The Stepford Wives culturally. I hadn't realized this was Science Fiction until I picked it up (which is my own fault), but as someone who doesn't typically read Science Fiction I still enjoyed it. It's a quick read, but in that short period of time you can clearly see why it became the cultural phenomena it is today. Joanna's quest to make friends in a new city and manage her own desires with the pressure to be a good wife is relatable.
Spoiler As the clock ticks on and pressure mounts for her to find out what is going on in Stepford, CT I was glad it was a short read, as I didn't want to put it down. Some aspects are obviously dated, specifically all of the references to animatronics, but in all it only added to the charm.

I don't quite know how I feel about this.

Don't get me wrong, it was well-written and I really enjoyed the story and the character of Joanna. I just...it feels inconclusive to me? I understand that Joanna's transformation is implied, but I wanted to know more information about the 'how' and the 'why' of it all, if that makes sense. It also left off with me feeling terrified for Ruthanne.

Overall a good, fast-paced read. Kind of got me out of a bit of a slump. I'm just...I guess I wish there'd been something more about what was really going on in Stepford.
