After having local schools assigning biographies to the very early grades, I went on a search for titles that I could purchase for the library that would be good biographies as well as wonderful, enticing reads for them. With help from a co-worker, I found a plethora of such books in recently published picture book biographies. This book by Monica Brown hit all of my requirements. It is a gorgeous book that will catch their attention with its illustrations that are alive with color and context. The text is informative and talks of the things that inspired Neruda's writing, and the quality of the writing is noteworthy (it won a Book Americas Award). All in all, I think this will be a wonderful addition to any library - I've added it to my personal library as well as our public one.

Gorgeous gorgeous illustrations. In my opinion, it is deserving of a Caldecott.

A delightful children's book about one of my favorite poets, Pablo Neruda. The writing is fun and just a summary of his life, but the artwork is gorgeous. Each illustration shows English and Spanish words floating together. The words form the basis of worldly things in the illustrations: books, trees, sunlight, wind, etc. These are all examples of Neruda's poetry, as he often wrote about everyday things.

Having read Pam Munoz Ryan's "The Dreamer," I was familiar with Pablo Neruda's life. I appreciated how this story was composed for a younger audience, though it left out some details most adults might thing important. What the book doesn't leave out is the spirit of Neruda's work, and I loved the way the illustrations were made of words, both Spanish and English.

Well my first thought was, not another kid's book about Neruda ([b:The Dreamer|6761339|The Dreamer|Pam Muñoz Ryan|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1275692045s/6761339.jpg|7070380]), but I really liked it. Perfect illustrations of all the words flowing through a poet's life. I love that the words are in different languages and it does not matter if I don't know what they mean. You can feel what the words are based on the story, the illustrations, the other words. Perfect for a book about a poet!

What an exemplary book with truly unique illustrations. Words of many different languages roil and interact playfully within Neruda's landscape--an appropriate homage to a remarkable poet.

Use of words in the illustrations added and was very unique, could have used more depth to the information.

I enjoyed this book because it's a great way to introduce children to a great poet without worrying about the content. Neruda's poetry is wonderful, but some of it might be understood by the children. So the books talks about his life before he was a poet and while he was a poet. How he used anything as a muse. The artwork is wonderful too because you can see the words in the background in the blades of grass and trees, it's symbolic of how he saw things and found words to write. Great book!
