they could have said they were lesbians.... and not just "really good friends"

A work of historical fiction set in the time of England’s witch trials, but ultimately kind of disappointing. It’s a story of feminine power, but I found it a bit contrived and the relationships uninspiring.

It’s a slow start (first 20% or so), but once it gets going, it’s not to be put down!

This book completely swept me away. The setting — Lancashire during the Pendle witch trials — was dark, moody, and totally immersive. Stacey Halls does an amazing job of blending real historical figures with fiction, and it made the whole story feel eerily believable.

Fleetwood Shuttleworth (what a name!) is a protagonist you can’t help but root for — young, pregnant, and increasingly suspicious of the men around her making decisions about her body and her future. Her bond with Alice Gray, the accused midwife, was the emotional heartbeat of the story and I was so invested.

It had everything I love in historical fiction: a bit of mystery, a strong sense of place, complex female relationships, and a plot that steadily builds toward a powerful ending. No surprise I devoured it.
