I don’t read a lot of classics. I am glad I read this one. Brutally brilliant depiction of war and its emotional effect in the common soldier’s psyche.

Heartbreaking, so many scenes where I wanted to put the book down but could not stop reading because of the detail Remarque goes into. The scene that has stuck with me most is the horses, describing the main heard and just how difficult it was for the men in so much depth

This took me much longer to finish than I ever intended, but I’m very glad I came back to it. “Haunting” might be the best way to describe this book. It’s one that everyone NEEDS to read in their lifetime.
“I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I know nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow. . .What do they expect of us if a time ever comes when the war is over? Through the years our business has been killing;-it was our first calling in life. Our knowledge of life is limited to death. What will happen afterwards? And what shall come out of us?”
