A lot of potential but something fell flat for me. You should have been rooting for Magda all the way through and I mostly stopped caring about halfway through and then picked up again in the last few pages.

I wanted to love this story, it sounded so promising. But I just never got attached to Magda the way I need to in order to be invested.
slow-paced

I was just really bored.

The premise was good, but the writing was distant. I couldn’t lose myself in the story.

Magda is turning 70 and her best friend, Sara, is planning a road trip. Sara has planned most of Magda's birthdays, Magda the reluctant guest to her own parties. A road trip  comes with emotional strings attached for Magda, but Sara dies before Magda's birthday. Grieving, Magda takes the trip anyway.

This book is underrated and under the radar - it's really a lovely story. As Magda travels across the country, she travels back in time to a pivotal moment in her childhood that defines her entire life moving forward, including her friendship with Sara. I listened on audio book and I think more books need older protagonists! I highly recommend this book.

A lot of time my enjoyment (or lack of) in a book is my expectations. And I think that is the case with this one. I was expecting an Ove or All the Lonely People vibe (heartfelt yet funny moments). Magda Eklund reminded me more of Lillian Boxfish in voice and style. It was more introspective, quiet and serious where I was expecting a fun road trip with an urn of ashes. I enjoyed it at the end but the first half was ruined for me because I wasn't getting what I expected from it.
