I would have liked this book so much better had the blurb not been incorrect. This is a painfully constructed novel. One of those books someone writes and edits and re-edits and shares with an elite writers workshop. Sentences that someone has memorized.

This is a soft spoken grief novel. An unrequited love, sapphic, journey of loss through ordinary life. This book is surprising but not heartwarming. No mystery or even romance, but a deep character development over the course of years of a friendship. It’s an odd title and an odd choice of cover art.

A 70 year old Manhattan therapist and her near self-indulgent quest to make sense of her friendships and love over the course of her life. Read it slowly and with an open heart.

Magda’s life is just fine. Well, ok, she lost he best friend Sara recently and life has been a bit of a struggle since then. Sara was always a bit more of a birthday person than Magda was, and always wanted to outdo her plans for Magda’s big day. While reading her journals after her passing, Magda finds the plans for hr 70th birthday. So with Sara’s urn in the passenger seat, Magda takes off on the planned road trip.

I was a bit worried to start this book since it was about grief, I mean hello that is my life these days, why do I need to read about it? I really enjoyed following along as Magda found her way through her grief, but also found a bit of herself along the way. Overall I really enjoyed this read!

By the end Madga annoyed the bejesus out of me. SOOO STUCK. And then an ending I found not so believable. And the smoking piece. Goodness every cigarette mentioned. Annoying.

Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this advance copy. These opinions are my own.
I immediately requested this book based on "For Fans of Remarkably Bright..."
This is not that. It has none of the same charm as RBC and it is misleading to say its for fans. I was enjoying the book in the beginning but the characters were meh and the plot was meh and I just cant conjure up more to say. I think the simple placement of the words "For fans of RBC" ruined it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ / 3 stars

I was so excited to read this book when I learned about it through a webinar at work.

I thought I was going in for a lighter read dealing with serious issues, but it was heavier than expected with just a few moments of laughter.

The only comparison I can give to Remarkably Bright Creatures is the lonely older female lead character.

This book was pretty slow to get going, but I did begin to enjoy it a bit more at about the 70% mark.
