This book definitely felt like a prequel, providing the set up for what is to come in the characters’ stories.

If only the story as intriguing as the cover.

Good but too fast for the pace of the character development (but such is the issue with shorter fantasy books).

An EXCELLENT short story. I loved exploring a culture I'm unfamiliar with and getting to translate some Polish while I read. The book itself is quite short but it was a good reset for me after reading some longer things before. Can't wait to explore these characters again.

Chicago was a city ruled by monsters, and all those monsters were women—strzyga, zmora, and llorona, each a legend of wronged women, sinful women, mysterious women. Tragic and powerful figures, all, not to be underestimated

🧌I'm a huge fan of the Witcher series, which has its own roots in Polish folklore/monster, so I thought this would be right up my alley. I immediately fell in love with the leshy - I wish he were in it more than the opening scene.  I did enjoy all the folkloric elements; there were glimpses of something dark, eerie, that just didn't quite breach the surface. But instead of being swept away, I felt more like I was skimming across it.

🩸I love a novella but I think this concept could have been fleshed out more and after finishing it, I couldn't really tell you what happened when. The relationships between characters did feel a little rushed, and I never really connected with anyone on the page. There’s a certain detachment in the way their relationships unfold, which made it hard to invest in either the stakes or their emotions.
