This book gave a whole new perspective of the vampire. Yes, they are romanticized, but the author shows how brutal they can be. It's not about two small punctures; it's ripping of flesh and cracking of bones to get to the blood. I don't think I really understand Louis at all; or maybe I don't want to. The constant misery of his existence just puts a pall over the book. Lestats' arrogance reminds us of typical vampires; loving their hype and the reader loving it too. His pain may be more present than Louis's.
Again, the perspective and well thought out history that the author provides makes you almost wonder.... is it true?? Can this happen??

Re-reading this book after 15 years has been an interesting experience, getting to know the characters again, seeing the archetypes at play, knowing about Rice's grief for her own daughter and her own queerness, it gives a lot more depth to the story. Looking forward to starting the next book.

I think it was ruined for me by the show but still a very interesting take on vampirism.

Read again after 20+ years, still love it!
