DNF at 37%
Stars: 1/5 if I were to finish it
Booktok did me wrong on this one. I wanted to love this book SOOO bad, but for some reason I just could not get through it to save my life. At this point reading Lightlark was like struggling in quicksand and therefore I decided to DNF it. The idea of the story was great (kinda hunger games-ish), loved it actually .... the book itself .... was just not executed well. I want to think it was because of the writing style. It almost seemed as if she was writing strictly by the thesaurus sitting next to her. There were so many extra words in sentences that had no need to be there and also some sentences themselves did not make sense as to why they were in there. The characters and setting fell flat in my opinion, not much description for either of them. In conclusion, Lightlark was lacking in many places (plot holes, characters, settings, etc.) and the writing ... was ugh.
I will give Alex Aster another chance by reading another book of hers later down the road, but this is just not for me.

I completely missed the hype on this book, so I was unaware that it was supposed to be completely different.
BUT! I was not disappointed. As a matter of fact, I gave this one an initial 4 stars because I actually really enjoyed the story. The main character gave wildling meets succubus vibes that were to die for. The romantic interests that were polar opposites but somehow both fell for the girl who was voted most likely to die... That was the best kind of cliche. The betrayal and heartbreak that our MC went through was shocking, but also made so much sense.
To find out that her whole story had been one massive spiderweb of deceit, orchestrated by those closest to her, was a gut punch.
I'm thoroughly looking forward to book two and seeing our magical maiden coming into her power.
