Yes. just yes. Read it!

I honestly can’t say anything without feeling like I might spoils something. But this book was so good, I was hooked from the beginning! The world, the curses, the plotting, it was all so good!

I think this book gets too much hype and too much hate simultaneously. For the books intended purpose of serving a younger audience, it is fine. Not revolutionary, but not bad enough to warrant insane hate.

The worst part of this book to me was the romance. Felt very undeveloped. Like she never had feelings for this man then all the sudden loves him? Ok sis maybe try a therapist idk…..

Isla Crown is the Wildling ruler and, as ruler, she must join five other rulers in partaking in the Centennial - a deadly game to try and break the curses placed upon the rulers and their peoples long ago. There's just a small problem that Isla can't let anyone find out about her and must keep hidden. Who exactly can she trust in this treacherous game?

I enjoyed this fun and adventurous story about Isla Crown and what happens during the Centennial where she meets other interesting rulers and we learn about the curses. I just found it a little tricky to follow at times with regards to the actual rules of the game and the point behind the demonstrations. You're thrust straight into action as Isla gets swept away to Lightlark and the Centennial immediately starts, and you have to find out things along the way regarding the game, curses and history of Lightlark. Having a bit more background information before going straight in would have been welcome and helped to understand the world more.

The story itself is entertaining and I liked seeing a lot of Lightlark but I found sometimes the story seemed to meander like when Isla was searching for something - it's like the game paused (even though it was still part of the game?) which felt odd. I think maybe the rules of the game could have been made clearer and the different bits of the game could have had more purpose and structure. I wonder if game is even the right word? It was more of a research project into the curses and how to break them, and it felt like it would have made more sense for all the rulers to work together rather than separately and then in pairs.

The other thing I think could have been improved was the descriptions of the characters which were virtually non-existent. I couldn't picture how the characters looked - more detail was needed to fully flesh out the character and really feel them in the story. I think this ultimately comes down to writing and while the writing is good, I think it needed a little bit more work to be really good.

That being said, it is a fun read and it surprised me! I thought it was obviously going to go one way and then I was a bit taken back when it went in another direction. I'm glad it wasn't obvious and kept me guessing; I did guess one thing but I wasn't expecting the reason behind it! I think the plot was fantastic and I loved its unpredictability.

I was shocked by how it ended and I did not see it coming! I honestly have no idea which direction things will go now and I'm glad this story is a little capricious because it makes it appealing to read. Overall, it's somewhat of a mixed bag for me with some things that could have been improved to make it great, but I did enjoy it and I will be continuing on with the series for sure.

This was a great YA fantasy packed full of action. I went into this blind and I was pleasantly surprised ! Isla was a great FMC and I couldn’t decide if I’m team Oro or grim it changed every few chapters. The story kept you gripped and I will definitely be reading book two.
