The Christmas Guest

Peter Swanson

3.56 AVERAGE

it took me far too long to read a book this short. as far as murder mysteries go, this is nothing thrilling or impressive. fairly boring with some strange plot twists
dark fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

A very Peter Swanson take on the gothic thriller

3.5/5
Would’ve been a 4 if Swanson didn’t randomly throw in the paranormal element at the end.

I get that it was supposed to be a nod to a Christmas Carol, but it just feels so jarring and random.

So good story execution (with bad ending execution)

Fun and efficient little Christmas mystery. Tails off a little at the end after it's done with its big twists but still a good mystery.

I read this after having read, The Kind Worth Killing, by the same author, Peter Swanson, and Hayden actually reached out and told me about this novella he did. Just in time for Christmas, I was able to get my hands on it from the library. Such a quick read, finished it in one sitting and really enjoyed it. There was a bit of a narration twist that you don’t see coming and I really enjoyed it.

I have already obtained my copies of the second and third of the original series I read, so it’s safe to say that I like this author.
